In these difficult economic times, we hear politicians express concern about the poor and unemployed. Suddenly, the poor are in fashion.
For John Russell, they are not a fashion. Nor are they a platform from which to launch his campaign for New London City Council. He does not spout platitudes about helping those who are struggling. He just does it.
Whether he is organizing one of the most successful annual fundraisers in New London for city homeless shelters, or finding work for a desperate man or woman, or running the latest of his successful businesses, Homeward Bound Treasures, he has been working all along for our city’s poor.
The fact that their ranks are increasing does not faze him. He is tireless on their behalf and on behalf of the city where they live. Unlike many candidates, He understands that the poor and homeless are a lightning rod for the health of New London. If they are left destitute, the city is the poorer for it.
On Nov. 3, we have the chance to elect a city councilor who combines compassion with fiscal responsibility and a long history of business acumen. It’s a no-brainer.
